About Us

After years in the vibrant culinary scene of South Beach, Miami, Chef Joe Monteiro brought his passion, creativity, and drive to Martha’s Vineyard. In 2011, he accepted the role of Executive Chef at the Atlantic Fish & Chop House in Edgartown, where his extensive culinary expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence helped propel the restaurant to remarkable success.

Never one to stand still, Chef Joe continued pursuing new opportunities. In 2016, he partnered with John Clift (Vintage MV Wine & Spirits) and Chad and Michelle Verdi (Verdi Productions) to launch Wash Ashore Beer Company, adding craft brewing to his growing list of ventures.

Then, in July 2017, Joe introduced something the Island craved: a true oyster bar. Just off Main Street in downtown Edgartown, 19 Raw Oyster Bar opened its doors in an intimate space featuring a small bar, raw bar, patio seating, and a menu crafted with precision and passion. The concept quickly became a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

As the restaurant’s popularity grew, so did Joe’s vision. In 2020, amid the challenges of a global pandemic, he expanded into the neighboring space with plans to create 19 Prime Cast Iron Steakhouse. While COVID-19 forced a shift in strategy, it ultimately inspired something even better. Rather than operating two separate restaurants, Joe combined the concepts into one seamless dining experience—bringing together the freshest seafood and the finest steaks under one roof.

The result is 19 Raw Oyster Bar & Prime Steakhouse, where the best of land and sea come together. Conveniently located just off Main Street in Edgartown, our restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining in a welcoming atmosphere designed for memorable meals and celebrations.

Open seasonally from April through October, our menu features freshly shucked oysters, crudos, ceviches, prime dry-aged steaks, and indulgent shareable sides. Guests can also enjoy two full-service bars featuring handcrafted cocktails, an extensive wine selection, and locally owned Wash Ashore Beer. For private events and special occasions, our elegant private dining space provides the perfect setting.

At 19 Raw Oyster Bar & Prime Steakhouse, we believe in quality ingredients, local flavors, and exceptional hospitality. Joe lives in Edgartown with his wife, Emily (a 4th generation Vineyard resident) and their two young children.

We would like to help take your event to the next level by adding some local charm. Hire us for a catered dory boat raw bar serving local seafood and items from our restaurant or rent our 1948 Wash Ashore Beer Tap Truck to pour some local brews, and finally, wow your guests with a stunning statement upon arrival - a custom champagne wall designed and built by a local designer and architect.
